Hurricane Ike – The Humans
Last Saturday I left the cypress cottage and drove down the bayou to my home to wait for the “flood adjuster”, and he was already there. Not one, Stephanie of Gonzales, but TWO. TWO ADJUSTERS!!! And buddy, they meant business. They were half an hour early and had already gone around the outside of the house making their notes. They had a laptop open and were typing on it when I arrived.
After leading them inside, dreading the smell (which I cannot describe to you), hanging around, and answering their questions, I went back out into the yard to pick up some of the trash that had washed up and add it to the growing refuse pile on the shoulder of the road.
There I was, looking all lonely and forlorn, dragging refuse to the road, when a truck pulling a flatbed trailer slowed down, staring and pointing at my house. Who is this? I asked myself. Tourists? Sight seers?
As they pulled over on the shoulder of the road, they rolled down the window and the guy in the backseat smiled and asked, “Hey, would you like some help with that tree over there? We have three chain saws and we could take care of it in no time!”
Realize, friends, that I am still not 100% me, sort of zombie-like in my reactions, so I rudely answered, “Uh, sure, how much will it cost me?”
The jovial young man answered, “Not a thing! We just want to help!”
Just like that, they were out of the truck,
cranking up their saws,
and faster than you could say chain saw murder good samaritans, saws were buzzing, chips were flying,
and the job was done! Amazing! Simply amazing!
They holstered their saws and said the “bobcat” crew would be coming shortly to haul all the branches and logs to the trash pile on the side of the road, and would that be ok with me.
Ok with me? Are you kidding me? Sure it would be more than okay with me! So, to all you hard-working, selfless folks from Jackson, Mississippi who hit the road at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, September 27th, 2008 to come and help the Bayou People, I say merci a million times over.

Some people have ALL the luck! Two adjusters AND a chainsaw gang! (LOL) I’m really happy things are looking up for you. Y’all have been in our prayers.
We could use the “chainsaw gang” at my mother-in-law’s home. We’ve taken care of 1 1/2 trees, but the challenge will be on the last one. With a 18″ saw and a 10″ elec. it’s going to take quite a while. The tree stood 75′ and is about 3′ in diameter.
We found out last Thurs. (?) night, that we are being “re-assigned” to a new adjuster. Of course we haven’t heard from the new adjuster. So now I guess we’ll be on the bottom of the list.
FYI, right Parish, wrong town. It’s “Stephanie of Prairieville”. LOL.
You really are blessed! I’m glad to hear help has been around. I have tried to call and couldn’t get through. Not sure if cell is working in your area or not or if it’ just hard to get through. I’m keeping you in my prayers!
Sweet. Reminds me of my game freezer fiasco, help arrived so fast I didn’t even have first thought as to course of action. Drive around Jackson on my way to and from, looks great but not a gas stop. Maybe next trip.

Stephanie – Well, I apologize, because when I was at Cabela’s in Gonzales, you said you lived a couple miles down the road—or was I in Prairieville and just thought I was in Gonzales? Ok, then I’ll just start calling you Stephanie N. How’s that?
Yes, things are starting to look up as long as I don’t look too far into solving the problem of where we will live long term. That is a major post for another day when I’m not on borrowed internet. Gotta go pay bills now, but sure wish I could hang around and chat with all of you.
Kim – cell phone service is stil sporadic. But land line is now working. That number is posted on wetland tours site.
I’m here in the background with YOU in my prayers. Miss you too and stay strong. Will try and touch base with you later in the week.

BW,Cabela’s is in Gonzales. To simplify things, and less typing…..call me Steffi. Actually had some news today. Our Insurance adjuster is supposed to be here on Oct. 16th between 8-9 a.m.!
