Louisiana Outdoor Writers Annual Conference

LOWAI just got back and will give you a full report as soon as I can.  I’m tired, so it won’t be tonight.  Also, I will be scouting for trout first thing in the a.m.

Tuesday morning:  Report for Jury Duty for the first time in my life.   If I get chosen, I hope it’s nothing too traumatic!

Be back with posts as soon as I can!

Meanwhile, what have y’all been up to in this nice, fall weather?  I really want to know (oh and it’s time to win a Community Coffee product!)

Your road-weary,
stopped-and-caught-a-17-inch-red-off-the-side-of-the-road,
glad-to-be-home,

  1. you caught a 17 inch red fish off the side of the road?

Reest up for jury duty. Maybe the parties will cancel at the last moment. That has happened to me in Lafayette and Terrebonne. I get all ready to appear..and a phone call just before leaving the house..

    that trial has been postponed
    or delayed
    or settled

However, while Dad was still with McDermott he got called and ended up serving several weeks.

  2. I have been called for jury duty only a couple of times in my life. Once I dutifully reported, then sat around the rest of the day before being sent home.

The last time I was called was when I was teaching at a university–and the call was for exam week!

I showed the letter to the department chair and she wrote a lovely note saying that I was absolutely indispensible that week. She, of course, signed with her name–Sister Barbara Hughes.

I told her I hoped the person who’d written was a good Catholic boy (considering where I live the odds were really strong there.) She laughed and said “When Sister Says . . ”

I was excused. And I am now past the age (70) when I might be called again.

    Good Luck.

  3. I can’t wait to hear your report about the conference! All you need is one more thing to do! (jury duty) Hope that you get out of it.

  4. Missing the reds of the fish variety, but enjoying the reds and yellows and oranges of the leaf variety and hoping for a restful night in the old home state of Michigan. Can’t wait to hear about the conference!

  5. Bring a good book with you Tues. Make sure you write a scouting report when you bring us all up to date. Will you put a link up so we can read your award winning article? I’m interested and I’m sure others will be too.

  6. Jury duty….my poor mom is 80 and she gets notices at least twice a year! She calls and tells them her age and they threaten to issue a warrant for her arrest if she doesn’t show up! The last time, she told them to please arrest her because she would get all her meds free then and her SS checks might actually last all month. I think they finally got the message! LOL!!

As for the lovely fall weather, all the rain here in Texas has caused mold & mildew to cover my lower walls, furniture, floors, etc. in the past week. The humidity was over 80% in the house today. I am looking for a dehumidifier and lots of cleaning supplies! And, I am allergic to mold and mildew. I need Dianes mask!!

      1. Thanks! I got my husband to take me to the home improvement store today and picked up a dehumidifier. Supposed to pull up to 2 gallons of moisture out of the house per day. I hope it works as well at it as the ac did. Any of you ever use one?

Also ran by the store and picked up new pillows and a Bullet mixer. My blender went bottoms up! Now I can make those shrimp boullettes. I bet I spelled that wrong.

        1. Good luck with “boulette” (you were very close!) and dehumidifying. I saw an infomercial on the “Ninja Blender” the other night. Man, I might need one of those in my stocking so Termite can go to town on everything in the pantry! He can blend some Cheerios to put on his ice cream! Or blend ice cream into his Carnation Instant Breakfast drink! Ok, I’m off to the court house, hoping I don’t get chosen. The trout are calling me.

          1. LOL @ Termite with a Ninja Blender! Would the thing actually be small enough to put into a stocking? I always have trouble finding good stocking stuffers…

              1. Nope, sure haven’t, but I’ll keep my eyes open for it! My interest is officially peaked.

  7. I’ve never been called for jury duty. Of course my best friend is a probation officer and I spend a lot of time with her and her deputy friends so they probably know I may not be the best candidate for that job. I never can get them to shoot anybody when we are out to lunch for driving slow, taking their time waiting on our table or just for being stupid. I do however have to attend a suicide prevention training so I can spot suicidal clients. I am not as worried about suicidal clients as I am the HOMICIDAL ones. Wow, where was I going with this?

  8. I loved jury duty. More criminals in the jury than on trial. You can not get out of JD here. You can opt out of cases that are to close to home. I got the old lady off the check charges too.

I am in the pool till May.

  9. I was called to jury duty once. It was a case of a man raping a young girl. Boy, I was praying I didn’t get chosen. I didn’t want to have to listen to all the gory details of that.

Fortunately, they found enough jurors before they got to me, so I got to go home.

    1. Day late and about a dozen trout short, TB! Scouted yesterday and found some nice ones lurking on bottom. Not a meat haul, but rewarding just the same. As you can tell, I got the boot today at jury today, but must call for instructions again tonight.
