Who dat say who scat?

Yes, yes, I know that is a very, very strange blog post title.  But you see, there is never an uninteresting dull moment or walk in the yard down the bayou.

The other day, while watching the builders build, I took a little stroll around the yard looking here and there with my trusty Nikon hanging off my shoulder.

And honestly, I never know what I might stumble upon, and I’m never disappointed.

Of course, these didn’t happen here by accident . . .

And you flower lovers know these are commonly called Narcissus . . . genus name.  Do you know the story of how these flowers came to be called Narcissus?  It has to do with that Greek guy that was in love with his own reflection . . . so much so that he starved to death staring at himself in a pond.  Anyway, these are some that I naturalized in the yard, and am continually amazed at their resilience to saltwater intrusion.  This particular sampling of sweet aroma and pretty yellow centers is called Paper Whites.

Honestly, I hung around in that area of the yard for a while, looking down, with great concentration, hoping a four-leaf clover would find me.  My diligence never paid off in the form of the rare occurrence . . . but this is what did find me . . .

and had me puzzled for a quite a while.  Whose scat is this?  For sure, it was left by neither TiDu or Butch.  It is not rabbit scat, because BW knows her rabbit poo.  It’s not raccoon poo, because there are no seeds in it.  BW knows her coon poo too (LOL!)  It’s not rooster dookey or hen dookey, to be sure.  But what it does look very much like is deer scat.  What would make that so special, you might ask?  The location, that’s what.  This was in my front yard, which faces the highway and the bayou.  We have never seen a deer in the front yard.  We have seen their hoof prints way on the back of our 3 acres, but never this close to the house.  So, BW is calling all SCAT EXPERTS to chime in on this post and solve the WHO SCAT? mystery for us all.  Now, just don’t go do a Google search.  I did that already.  I want real verification from a real expert.

And then a truck arrived from the lumber yard with a special delivery.  I walked out back to chat with him and to see that he was dropping off some more nails so Carlos could finish nailing up the hurricane straps.  And then with great flair, he whipped something out of his pocket that nearly made my teeth fall out.  I mean, if they had been false, I would have surely dropped my chompers.

“Bet you haven’t seen one of THESE!” he said with great pride.

Boy was he right, and I may never see one again.  He proceeded to gloat, bragging, “And I didn’t pay $800 for it, either!”

ME:  “Wow, really?  How in the world did you get a discount?”

HIM, laughing:  “Oh, no,  honey.  You misunderstood me.  I never said I got a discount.  I paid  $2024.00 for this baby.”

And then I fainted dead away.

I’m revived now, because Dotter took me to New Orleans to eat Lebanese food, which I am in love with, and to see a musical.  We somehow managed to escape Mardi Gras Parade Madness, but we did not escape the Black and Gold.  Did you know people in New Orleans actually own and wear black and gold formal wear with fleur de lis patterns?

Tell me, all you WHO DATTERS out there . . . where are you watching the game?  Who with?  And what will you wear? What will you eat?  We’re going to barbecue for the game, since we could not find affordable crawfish to boil.  I’m attempting my first ever homemade chicken wings.  We’ll see how that goes.  Maybe I’ll post up some pics on Monday.

Who dat?

BW, dat’s who.

  1. The picture of the Narcissus is gorgeous! I didn’t think they’d be blooming this early. They a very hardy. I’d say they are almost indestructible. A little saltwater won’t keep them from coming back year after year.
I didn’t know you were so well informed, or that there were so many ways to say cr#* or to be more blunt…S#%*! (BTW, the flower photo was much prettier LOL)
Ahh, tomorrow-Game Day! We’ve been invited to several places to watch THE game, but have opted to stay here. So, it will just be Hubby, his cousin, and me. I’ll be serving Hot wings w/Blue Cheese dressing, chips and dip and something that says New Orleans…Red Beans and Rice! May have to make some cornbread too.

    • Steph, will you fry your wings? And do you make your own sauce? If I like my results, I’ll do a recipe post. I’ll serve fresh vegetable slices with our blue cheese dip or ranch dip.

      • I have fried them w/and without flouring first. I’ll be baking them (just salt and Blk. pepper) today. I use the original Anchor Restaurant recipe for my coating sauce. 1 stick of butter, 10 Tbls. La. Hot Sauce (Crystal brand) and 2 Tbls. vinegar. Cook drummettes, coat with sauce and put them back in the oven (350 degrees) about 10 minutes. I’ve tried other recipes (Hooters for one) but we like this one best. It will open your Sinus passages. If you’re not into having a runny nose, cut back on the hot sauce. Give it a taste starting at 5 tbls.

  2. BW – I loved the title – it drew me in.

Re: your food choices for tomorrow’s game: I love everything I’ve ever eaten that was remotely Cajun influenced, so your crawfish boil would have been great. But – I lived in upstate NY for 10 years, and I KNOW Buffalo Wings!! They’re not real unless seved with Bleu Cheese. Don’t ruin your reputation by using Ranch!

    Wolfy

  3. Those buffalo wings sound yummy. I like them grilled and then tossed in a good, sweet/spicy sauce and put back on the grill to carmalize! As for sauces, no way. Why smother a good taste? In fact, I already have some that I put in the freezer. (I grill several items when I stoke the grill to keep from wasting my charcoal and hickory/mesquite. Then freeze the extra for convenience).
I have a whole chicken thawing that I will rub with herbs and put on the rotisserie. Also have the tomatos, onions, cilantro & peppers for homemade pico for hubby. I am thinking quacamole for me or else a good crab dip.
As for watching the game, hubby will but, I am not a football fan. I’ll pickup pecans or crack and shell them or read a good book.

    • Well, Cammy, (I’m whispering now, looking over my shoulder) I’m not a football fan either; but this is South Louisiana history going on here today. If I only ever watched ONE pro football game in my life, it needs to be this one! I would not be a true, blue south Louisiana Bayou Woman if I turned my back on this game. So, I hope you understand and give me a pass this time. And crack a few for me, okay? Thanks!

  4. I’ll be doing the wings too – after last weekend’s “I want wings” glitch in which I only had thighs.

Unfortunately he wasn’t into his cups well enough to believe me when I said they were from really large chickens.

And paper whites? Beautiful but I’m allergic. Outside would be ok but I wheeze and itch and can’t breath if they are inside. Weird, huh?

  5. I’m one of the rare few who will not be watching the game. Instead we are going see Mamma Mia! But I will be stopping by a Superbowl party afterwards – but mainly to eat and play games and to not watch the game. It would be awesome if the Saints won though.

    • Oh, Mel, we had tickets to Mama Mia tonight, but Dotter changed them because of the utter wild CHAOS that New Orleans will be during and after this game–we went on Friday. It was great, by the way. Have fun!

    • Now wait a minute, Richard. I might sleep with one eye open and a cross in my hand, with garlic hanging over my bed from now on if this is true. Don’t scare me like that. Besides, the Rougarou has better manners than to take a dump in BW’s front yard!!! (I’ll just keep telling myself that.)

  6. There’s a great Chinese/Cajun restaurant down the coast in Fulton, TX. Name? Hu Dat

Mama (age 91) is hosting the superbowl party. Her theory is, any excuse for junk food. On the menu: veggies and dip plus guacamole/salsa & chips, but also a good old Midwestern favorite for such occasions – grilled ham and swiss on rye with a horseradish/dill spread. It’s really quite good.

LOL on Richard’s scat take. Worth noting that’s the name of a literary journal out of Lafayette, too. I wonder who’s the rougarou? The agents, maybe?

    • You call that JUNK FOOD? What’s the matter with you, woman? LOL! I know the Rougarou personally, and he would never do such a thing! He and I dance in the full moon together on occasion. Agents are way worse than the Rougarou I know!

  7. Big pot of west Texas Chili! I love wings and make them occasionally, but for the most part since their new popularity I refuse to pay as much for wings as for a chicken! Thats ridiculous!

You can fry, bake, or grill your wings before saucing, but if you want that crunch and we all do, make sure they are dry when you cook them. Thats the single secret I know to buffalo wings. The dryer they are before cooking the crispier they cook out.

I noticed Tabasco has numerous added flavors now, its so bad it actually hard to find an original. And Cajun Power works well too.

But its a #18 full of Chili for the game, (one dirty pot), lots of cheese, crackers, onions, and Fritos. Throw away paper bowls and a ice chest of longnecks. I know they would be just as cold in the fridge, but there is something about an iced down longneck that just tastes better.

As to flowers, I lost all my bulbs I think in the freeze earlier. Its sad too, some were my Mom’s, her favorite was an purple and yellow iris that she called her LSU flower. A lady down river had invented the variety. All the Canata’s are gone, as well as the lilies. You never know, maybe next year they will come back.

    • FH – sorry you lost your bulbs. I had no clue that they would freeze. I would love to see an LSU iris. My cannas froze, that’s for sure. My ginger, too. I’m thinking no more tropicals.

  8. Mmmmm, I wish I could magically fly around and drop in on ever’bodys party! Here in Austin it’ll be an eclectic mix of turkey burger sliders, beans and yellow rice, chips and pico, queso and guacamole, and quick-fry taquitos from Sam’s. Have a stompin’ good time all!

Geaux Saints!! (I lived in Harahan as a little girl and used to accompany my dad on late night sales calls down in the swamps to peddle pump liners to the oil rigs. Hard to get south Louisiana out’ta my memories.)

  9. Having at “Who Dat” party at my house in Georgia. Yep, I’m gonna treat these country folks to some good Cajun food. Homemade shrimp, sausage, and okra gumbo, and I actually found a king cake at the grocery store here. GEAUX Saints!!!

  10. I’m not cookin’ anything! I made manicotti Friday for today. I know that’s not football fare but it’s good just the same. Hubby and I finally have the house to ourselves…..ALL DAY!!! I can rest and watch all the 17 hours of pre-game foolishness plus have the “facilities” all to myself.

I bake my wings in a hot oven instead of frying them and baste them with a honey/hot sauce misture. Blue cheese for dipping.

Geaux Bayou Boys!! Who Dat!?? This town is in a state of chaos over the Saints. My son dressed up in a black and gold mini-dress and danced in the Buddy D parade at the Dome the other day.

  11. geez if I knew somebody in La you’d think I could get a almond creamcheese king cake… Maybe Tony in RedStick?

Pork tenderloin bbq, Jack Daniel’s sauce and Brook’s Ketchup.
Got the making ready for chicken pot pie maybe at half time it will go in oven.
    Maybe tomorrow.

Daffodills I love them. I got them lining the drive and house with tulips. Over 1000 bulbs planted.

I am going with vagrant piggy poo….

Super Bowl maybe on radio not TV here….

And Ranch Dressing is ugly stuff for wimps not even fit for TiDu’s.

I’d delete the chinese sex links before the Huhn girl clicks on them.

      • Didn’t want to see that small stuff post.

No it is a policy thing I ask people to be my valentine that live far away and your as far away as I get. I have pretty good luck at it too. Still chronically single. I don’t share my Hubig’s they get swiped but no sharing.

3 days of snow maybe a foot maybe less but starts getting windy tomorrow.

I was working on my 9 ball game during game.

  12. We didn’t watch the game, we were coming home from a livestock show (which Nat won breed champion!!!) and by the time we unloaded the calves, pulled the truck and trailer out of the mudhole, showered and ate nobody wanted to watch the game.

    • I’m not sure if that sounds like fun or not. I assume your vehicles are equipped with winches, right? LOL! Cognrats to Nat for winning! That’s GREAT!!!!! Post a pic on FB!

  13. WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!! Thanks everyone, for all the comments on this post. This post was a sneaky contest that was not announced. The reader who figured out that this was indeed Pot Likker poop won a gift from Community Coffee! Congratulations, CHOUP!!! YOU WON!!! Kim was the fist to mention “wild boar”, but if she would have said pot belly pig, she would have been the winner.

Okay, off to make a new post for your enjoyment!

  14. Wow! I missed the whole party here, although I did watch the game. WHO DAT?? We were invited a couple of places but opted to stay home and watch cuz we’ve got the best tv. Next year we’ll have to host a party of our own!
