Chaoui found plenty to keep herself busy at Grand Isle. I watched, took photos, and just enjoyed the heck out of watching my kids enjoy themselves!

Well, it’s that time again. The final episode of Swamp People aired last Thursday night, with R.J. and Troy battling it out for the “King of the Swamp” bragging rights. Although there was never a big to do made over which one actually holds the title, the show would have us believe that both men filled their 500 alligator tag quotas. And if they did, well, good for them.
Candice Olsen, I’m not. I can watch hours and hours of design show reruns and still not have an ounce of design sense in this old brain. I mean, Candice would NEVER wait until the walls were painted to pick her cabinet color, would she? Or the counter top color? Or the back splash color? …

It was 1979, and I was working as a dispatcher for ODECO. She answered the old black phone in her native tongue, her words lost on me. I had called her house to ask if her son, the crew boat captain, happened to be home. Hoping she could understand me, I continued in English, “He has to go on a run right now.” His boat was next up to take a trip out to the Gulf to deliver emergency equipment, and as night dispatcher, it was my job to find him. She understood me well enough to relate to me in broken English where she thought he might have been.
The Louisiana Outdoor Writers 72nd Annual Conference was held August 11th and 12th this past weekend in beautiful, historic Natchitoches, La.
