Great Blue Heron Contest Winners!

Everyone who attempted to answer the question(s) was entered in a drawing for the prizes.

First the names went on two lists:

The List of EntrantsThe Lurkers on the top half of the page,  and  The Veterans on the bottom.

Then I printed the list, cut the names in strips, and folded them in fourths. The HatNext, I put them in my Grand Isle Ladies Fishing Rodeo hat.  It is pink.  See?

First, Jeremiah drew a name for the Lurkers . . .

Everyone was correct.  It was a Great Blue Heron.  Your guess is as good as mine as to the gender.  My guess is a young female.

    Double Trouble!

    We wound our way up a curvy bayou, looking for fishy water, and around the second curve she spotted a fishy-looking current line running from the western bank across the middle of the bayou and around the curve. We drifted in, and not long after she slung her bright yellow popping cork, it disappeared below the surface.

    “F I S H O N!” Patti yelled with as much enthusiasm as a die-hard football fan screaming “TOUCHDOWN!”, and I was as happy for her as she was about reeling in that yellow-mouthed speckled trout.

    We continued to pull in fish every few minutes at that spot until boat traffic scattered the fish, making them too spotty to find. Trolling on up the bayou, we cast around a few points that looked like ideal spots for trout to be hanging out waiting for bait fish. However, none of those spots were as profitable as our first stop.

    Once we traveled to the end of my GPS bread crumb line and farther than I had ever explored before, we tested the waters. Nothing. We looked for cuts in the marsh, where the bait-filled water flowed into the bayou, carrying the unsuspecting bait to the bigger fish that awaited. We fished a couple of those spots without much luck.

    Last month was a December for the record books — rainiest ever.  The past three days and the weekend to come might be record-breaking cold days. And neither of those facts has contributed positively to the lifestyle of BW.  Therefore, BW has almost nothing to write about and finds herself at such a loss that…

  2. Congratulations to the winners.
    Oysters, shrimp, yummy! Hubby likes gator but, I can’t acquire a taste for it.
    Mom called me yesterday and she had spent the day on the river where it feeds into the lake north of here. Said she had a nice stringer of sand bass & catfish to clean. She is stocking her freezer for the winter! She also saw some deer tracks and wild boar tracks along with a flock of geese. Wish she knew how to operate a camera!

  3. Hey, I placed a comment this morning. What happened to it? It was nice. I wrote earlier how I liked the wildlife photos and would also like to see a food photo shoot (with the recipe of course). Corn and shrimp soup was also mentioned earlier too. I think I’m going to make some tomorrow (if I’ve recovered from tonight). We have all 8 grandchildren ages 4-8. Yes, before anyone ask….we’ve a few loose screws!

    1. Steffi, I’m just getting here and I don’t see your comment anywhere. I’m sorry it got lost in cyber space somewhere! I love it when you write, “nice” comments! LOL! Better tighten those screws so you can fish for trout soon! I don’t think I mentioned that kind of soup, but I did mention “redfish chowder”!

  4. I mentioned making Corn and Shrimp soup in my comment that’s out in cyberspace somewhere. Easy to make, and delicious too. Good thing it’s quick and easy. I’m pooped, Hubby’s pooped, the dog’s pooped, and the cat is still in hiding!
