As a wetland advocate and tour guide, I have the privilege of educating people from across the nation and across the oceans about the beauty and bounty, degradation and disappearance of the wetlands here. They learn about the necessity of healthy marshes to protect humans, wildlife, and infrastructure from storm surges. They hear for the first time that roughly, every 2.7 miles of healthy marsh reduces a storm surge by one foot.
In the midst of the worst environmental disaster America has ever seen, there are still pristine Louisiana wetlands where Bayou Woman goes on a regular basis.
Oil has made its way, unimpeded into the lower waters of Terrebonne parish, and will move into the marshes where it will cause untold death.
