PROW Project Days 5 and 6

The third week of the PROW project we began to see the start of nests, done by the male PROWs.  And it also appeared that the females were starting to arrive in the Lake Palourde area.

There weren’t a lot of new and interesting things to see, but I took some shots with you in mind – things I thought you might like to see along with me.

So, without further ado, I’ll share some photos with you, first from Lake Palourde area.  As always, please click on photos to see full images!

And in the Mandalay Wildlife Refuge, lots of aquatic plants and flowers were emerging, and upon closer inspection, I noticed a few I had not seen before.  After much research, I think I might have all the common names correct.  If not, please let me know!

This vine-like floating plant puzzles me. I did not find it on any aquatic website, at least in any photos that I could place it, so I don’t know what it’s called. I would very much like to know, so if you can figure it out, please educate me!  It’s actually quite attractive looking, or at least I think so!  It’s not water lettuce, because they free-float, not attached to a vine like this one.  Possibly, “floating primrose willow”, but until it sprouts yellow flowers, I’m just not sure of the ID.

Mystery Floating Plant

And this one below, because even though this is just a very common plant we call “saw grass” due to its sharp edges, I find beauty in the coloration and also the noise they make when the wind blows.

Saw Grass

And lastly, in this photo, I see four different floating plants, do you see them, too?

Name these floating plants!

Well, thank you for riding along with me.  I’m just a wee bit behind posting, but it’s all new to you, right?

Thanks again for having a look,

BW

  • Opening Week of Brown Shrimp Season

With the fading of last Louisiana wild yellow iris comes the budding of the brilliant pink of the Mimosa blooms and the beginning of the May brown shrimp season. Last Sunday night, dozens of small inland skimmer boats idled past the house, chug-chugging slowly down the bayou, creating as little wake as possible in patient procession to the three-mile inland waters where they would anchor for the night, and sleep until the official opening Monday morning at six.

  1. I have stuff in my yard that looks similar to some of these plants. I spent an hour tonight spreading a weed killer over most of the yard because in the past few months, it has been covered with the clover that has burs in it. That stuff took over so fast.

Your photos are beautiful and make one feel as if we were there with you.

  2. I discovered what I thought was a weird grass coming up in my iris bed but thought it might be something else. It turned out to be Louisiana Iris! There are 5 or 6 of them. And they are 3 different colors. One is so different and beautiful and I have never seen anything like it before. It is 3 colors. Starts with a peachy/beige then a blue or purple then the tips of the flower petals are yellow! I took a photo of it and wish I could show it to you. It’s so beautiful. I hope it comes back next year. And I wish I could remember where I got the bulbs and when. I may have gotten them a couple of years ago from a school fund raiser.
