Wild Hibiscus

wildhibiscus.jpg

This flower is locally called “wild hibiscus”.

The book I use as for identification is Wildflowers of Louisiana and Adjoining States (out of print). It says this flower is from the “mallow family”.

This Web site calls them “rose mallow” or “swamp mallow”.

So, those of you who had any of the above words in your guess were entered in a drawing. Your names were placed in a basket, and one of my sons drew a name.

And the winner is . . . .Heather!!!!!

Heather, do you want pecans or scarlet sage seeds?

Thanks for playing, everyone.  Now you know the name of one more of our lovely native flowers.

I am waiting for the cold front to arrive so I can do my holiday baking and invite you into my kitchen via photos of our annual Gingerbread Bayou People Bake-a-thon!

Come back soon!

It was only five years ago, but it seems like a lifetime. Yep, this blog is now five years old and has gone beyond my wildest dreams, hopes, expectations. Lil Sis is the one who is responsible for getting me started doing this blog in the first place. She had to convince me that it would be good for business and a great way to further educate folks about life down here in the Louisiana wetlands.

It was our oldest son’s 27th birthday, and he absolutely was surprised, as you will see below! But first, what do you think he wanted to do the actual day of his birthday? Yep, he wanted to go fishing with Mom.  I was touched that he wanted to spend the day with me.  We chased…

OR The Artsy Side of Duck Hunting I love the over-exposed look of this pic.  Because I was under a “no flash” order, the slightest movement of either subject or camera causes noise, like seen above. I call this one “Roseau Sky” because this is what I could see while I was reclining amongst the…

  2. I have this flower in my yard in the summer time. I was suprised that there are several different variations of mallow with different growth patterns too.

Isn’t it neat how we learn from one another? How did you find me? Thanks for commenting, RR! Please come back any time! I will go pay you a visit now.

  3. One of these just showed up in my backyard this morning. Very lovely! Where in Louisiana are you? I’m in St. Tammany Parish, north of Lake Pontchartrain.
    Peace!

Hi Lana, and welcome to the bayou! I am in lower Terrebonne Parish. The bayou on which I live runs to the Gulf of Mexico! Thanks for stopping by, now I’ll go see you!

  4. Hello. I’m link hopping from over on Lana’s blog. After I read your post, the first thing I thought was “That woman sure has a long time to wait for a cold front.” Then, I looked at the post date. Doh! Sometimes I’m a little slow.

Anyhow… I enjoyed your rose mallow photo and hope your holiday baking went well last December.

That’s funny!!! Thanks for coming by, Marvin, and come back anytime. There’s always something going on down the bayou!
