Fishing, I mean catching, really was hard work today!
By now, all of the state and most of the country knows that Louisiana had its first ever early snow–record-breaking early. We almost NEVER have snow, so it was quite a fluke. In some places it was piled eight inches high and stayed all day. That was shocking, too!
Last night’s temps dropped way down in the low thirties, but didn’t stay there. But I have to ask you a question, do trout bite when the air temp is only 40 F?
And the answer is a resounding NO! Today was a charter trip with Kelly G. from Houma Tourism and Lyle J. and Goosie G. of Ascension Outdoors, a TV show broadcast by Eatel Cablevision of Baton Rouge.
The trip had been rescheduled once and was about to be rescheduled again until we decided last night we would brave the cold and see what happened.
You know what they say? The show must go on. But by 10:30 a.m. I was beginning to worry there would be nothing to put on the show. We had not one nibble nor one bite.
We fished Lake Decade until around 11, when Capt. John, another guide, called to say the water was more clear at the mouth of the lake.
Gradually, we moved to the mouth, set anchor and threw out a couple bottom rigs with live minnows. While a couple of us were soaking minnows, Lyle was determined to pull in the first big redfish on a Berkley Gulp bait . . .
which he soon did. Termite was prompt with the net, which promptly broke while scooping up Lyle’s red. Thereafter, either Termite or I had to lie on our tummy and scoop the big fish up by hand. That was fun!
The trout didn’t start biting until around 1 p.m. and by the time we got over to where Capt. John was smokin’ ’em, they seemed to move elsewhere.
We picked away at the fish until mid-afternoon, and this is what we ended up with . . .
a mixed box of redfish, black drum, and speckled trout.
It was great fishing with these folks. Even though it was a lot of casting for a little catching, they seemed to have a good time. And the day warmed up beautifully–Kellie and Lyle even took off their jackets!
Boat’s still in the water . . . thinking about going tomorrow.

Hmmm that lawyer got some wing ding going on and some gumbo going on and all the trouts is hiding at the gate. I wish I was back on there throwing a cajun croaker….

I wish I could have made the trip with y’all. I think my eldest son was a bit ticked off at me that I couldn’t reschedule my appointment to fish with y’all. Oh well, I missed out on my 15 minutes of fame. LOL!
The box shot tells us it was a productive day, even though the trout had lockjaw. Let me know when the show airs so I can tape it for you. DVD or VHS?
I wish you would have been there, too! I guess they’ll let me know when it airs. DVD is fine! Or maybe they’ll send me a copy. Forgot to ask all that.
About the doc visit? If we don’t take care of our health, then we can’t fish!! So, health first, fishing second!!
I couldn’t believe it when I heard y’all got snow. We get it every winter and I wish it was like your snow and melted the same day. Your fishin’ looked pretty good to me.
It was a great day – even with the cold, slow morning!
