Fishing, sunset, baseball, and peaches

Okay, so I haven’t been blogging every day or even every other day.  I’m here, late at night, before I lay my weary head down, to ask your forgiveness.

. . . and to report just a glimpse of what I’ve been up to this week, besides managing Camp Dularge.

I managed to get in a visit with the Swamp Dwellers . . .

Gator Hunterand met this wonderful 84-year-old who was spilling over with history of his swamp-dwelling ancestors.  These two men are first cousins.  Though there is 30 years between them, they are still very close.  I found that very refreshing.

bass.fishingThe Old Cousin gave me a history lesson while the bass teased these two.  Diane and The Milkman took turns trying to snag them.  No luck.

mauvais.sunsetTime flew by and it was almost sunset and past time to leave before Diane and I realized it.

peachesThese lucious peaches from Alabama came along for the ride with an old friend, whom I haven’t seen in 12 years.  It was good to reaquaint with her and talk about old times.  My, how things change in 12 years!

short.stopAnd baseball.  Termite’s been playing and I’ve been watching and cheering.  He is in the midst of the final tournament of the season and won his game tonight.  He plays again tomorrow night–single elimination.  I hope we win.

So, my friends, I’d like to know what you’ve been doing, because I have barely had time to eat much less write and read emails.

  1. I’ve not done much since we got home on vacation. So far I’ve only made one full day at work and spent the rest either at doctors or home on pain meds. The kids are both off to church camp and I had so many plans to clean the house really well….

  2. I’m finishing off a very hot cup of Community coffee as I type. Preparing for my wife’s minor surgery tomorrow. She’ll need lots of coffee! (hint-hint) What position does Termite play? He looks really good but I’d rather see him netting a fish for me. Tell him I said hello!

    1. Termite plays short stop and then catcher. He is good! I told him you said hello and he asked if you can send him a copy of your duck hunting trip TV show!

  3. I’ve been working, taking care of Dad and lurking out here waiting on you to post something. The sunset pic is beautiful. What are you going to show us how to cook with those nice looking peaches?

  4. Just hanging out. My grandaughter was married the first week in June. It is all so anti-climatic after all the planning for the last year. It was a beautiful wedding and a most beautiful bride. Wedding and reception at a resort on the lake. Love your pictures and, by the way, I do love a good cup of coffee!

  5. We’re just busy all the time. Maybe we have too many hobbies, and jobs too. I’d be like you trying to find time to write without going to sleep. I finished up our area Eastern Star installations, now preparing for a little convention I have to preside at next week. We’re heading to Durango as fast as we can for 4 days over the 4th. A little motorcycle riding, a little ham radio, a little laundry, walk the dogs, plan for the next event, work, eat and sleep. And dream of coming to the bayou for a fishing trip.

  6. Oh those peaches look so yummy! I think I can smell the Peach Pie baking in your oven!

Pretty much same old same old here. Mowing the lawn……..weeding the gardens.

It’s been on the cool side here…….we need more
sunshine……the corn and bean fields need it to grow too…….along with the hay crop. This time or soon next month we’ll be baling hay.

I would sure love a treat of that COFFEE!
    Hope I win!

  7. For the last two months I’ve had my dad in a nursing home near my home. I have been driving the eighty mile round trip from moms’ house at least twice, sometimes three times a week to bring moma from her home over to visit with daddy, then bringing her back home the next day. It’s a rather tiring thing to have to get through, at least till mom can get thngs better situated. Hmmm. a good hot cup of coffee would probably help, a lot. But my one and only grandchild (grand-daughter) graduated from high school during the process, so I had a wonderful fun time celebrating her special event in the middle of all the ‘hectic’.
Ummmm, I love peaches. Love your blog, too!

    1. Pamela, remember to let someone take care of and do something nice for you while you are care giving. Thanks for visiting and commenting, too! BW

  8. Those peaches do look good. Darn shame I am allergic to fresh ones but, I can sure handle them cooked. Love them grilled and topped with brown sugar. Nice and carmely tasting.

Best of luck Termite!! Knock it out of the park!

Been canning down this way. We need rain so bad too. I also volunteer at the local share center (food bank) and we had close to 300 families there today. Oh my aching feet. Now if I had a big photo on the wall of that gorgeous sunset, I would prop my sore feet and legs up, grab a cup of coffee and pretend I was on a jetty listening to the sounds of evening setting in and watching the sun set.

  9. I been kayaking and fly fishing and planted some runner and wonder beans and some cukes. Making the Taxman, the Insurance man and the Lawyer rich. And another round of no working. Entered in to the sad banking world of debit cards and moved a bunch of techie sites over to Firefox.

River, the insane criminal doggie, is on new drug for incontinence.
It finally got hot and humid here perfect for 2 a day bike rides.

Might do a few ribs in the big kenmore tomorrow.

And Termite ??? Start kicking the football, dude. Mom doesn’t want to work forever and plenty time to guide after. Baseball is fishing season.
    Geaux Tigers…..

Start day shift Monday. The rumble has already started.

Peaches I can Du couple times a year.

    How’s Loozy in July?

  10. I wish I could get to more of Seth’s games, but rehearsal schedule is kicking me around pretty nice… Did they win tonight? Any games this weekend? Also, my mouth started watering for Papa’s peach ice cream as soon as I saw them! I know we don’t have an ice cream maker, but maybe we could get one! Also, I’m making dinner for David and Daniel tomorrow night — pulled pork tacos! I’m trying it out on them because I’ve never made it before (got the recipe from Courtney) and if it’s a hit, I’ll make it for all of us soon! (I only bought a small tenderloin, so there won’t me enough this time around.)

      1. They were great when Courtney made them, and I’m now a big fan of anything that can cook itself in a crock pot. It’s cooking now, so I’ll let you know how it turns out! And Mommer, you’ll be so proud — I cut up an entire onion and didn’t die! 🙂

          1. Dotter, try the noonday onions. Put it in the freezer for about 5-10 min before trying to dice it. They are much milder and don’t bring as many tears. Also, better for my ulcer.
Hope your pulled pork tacos were a hit. If they were, try some pulled pork enchiladas. Yummy!

              1. Thanks for posting it, Cammy. My husband is the smoker/griller around here. I’m going to have to try this.

              2. As long as Heather found it. I figured it would post on the bottom of the replies.
Heather, if you try it and like it, let us know please.

PS: picked up some fresh, (frozen) shrimp today to make Wendys recipe. They are from LA too and were on sale. Also, got some more smoked sausage since my smoked venison went south to my daughters house. Plan to fix it Tuesday night.

    1. It’s a good thing we’re close or my feelings might be hurt that we’re not invited tonight. I’m actually jealous, though, that you four are getting together and I won’t be there! How about if I bring the peach ice cream? Would that get me invited?

      1. Anytime you want help being trouble let me know. Got 2 weeks in July for
food fun and frivolity coming up. And a new to me 14 foot Orvis spey rod??

      2. I don’t know blu.The two of us in Loozy at the same time might be too much for the bayou people to handle. Plus July is when people desperately try to get out of here which is what I plan to do. Heading north for a few weeks to enjoy cooler breezes while I fish.

  11. Don’t be hurt, lovely Mommer! I have to experiment on brothers before I feed you! (Read: They don’t cook, and you cook amazingly!) This is the trial run… Next time I make it I’ll have worked out the kinks and THEN we’ll all get together! And I still am not sure how I survived the onion… maybe because it was a red one AND I was wearing glasses? Do you still have that picture of me standing at the counter cutting up an onion wearing green safety goggles??? *lol*

  12. just looked at your website and was surprised to see the old man’s picture. I have known this man all my life.

  13. Had to jump in here for a tip. Dotter, if you cut the root end of the onion off last, they won’t bother you as much. (Or the way chefs do it) Make your slices just shy of the root (after cutting in half top to root …forgot that 1st step), then make your “cross” cut for the perfectly diced onion without all the crying.

  14. Campin, fishin, eatin, and socializin in Grand Isle till tomorrow. It may be hot as H#&&, but I’m lovin it! (Besides if the breeze dies down, I can always get in the air conditioned RV). BW, you noticed I said “fishin” huh? Not much catchin being done on artificial. Got my cast net, but Hubby forgot the bucket and aerator at home.

  15. Even though I have over 600 cookbooks, I usually read the recipes and then cook them “my way”. For the enchiladas, I use the left over, seasoned, shredded pork.
    For about 10-12, you need
    12 (6-8″) flour tortillas
about 3 cups of the pork,
1/2 -3/4 cup diced onions (sorry Dotter) +/- to your taste.
2 cans (10 oz each) green enchilada sauce
2 cups shredded cheddar or 1 cup cheddar and 1 cup of pepper jack (for spice)
1 cup of sour cream (optional)

Heat the tortillas per pkg instructions. Pour about 1/2 cup of the sauce in a 9×11 casserole dish and spread it out. Take a warm tortilla, spread about 1 tsp sauce over one side. Across the middle, put 1/4 cup meat, 1 tsp, onion & a sprinkle of cheese. If you want the sour cream on them, put a tsp. across the middle before you add the meat. Roll up like a cigar and place seam side down in the casserole. The first few will try to unroll so, use a clean glass filled with water to set against them (like a bookend) to keep them rolled until you fill them all. Pour the rest of the sauce over them evenly (try to get all the tortilla covered so ends don’t dry during baking). Sprinkle remaining cheese down the middle and bake at 350º for about 45 min or until bubbly. Top with more cheese if you wish or sour cream. We also put a line of jalepenos down them sometimes.

I use my big grill during the summer to smoke pork butt roasts. Then, I cut them in big chunks and add to the crockpot with the seasonings & a bit of broth for the dishes I want to cook later or bbq sauce and let them slow cook all day. Then I shred, bag, label and freeze 2-3 cups per bag. Great for quick meals.

  16. In this heat I don’t have the energy the rest of your commenters do! We’ve just returned from Tampa seeing our oldest granddaughter graduate from high school with honors. Our daughter from Connecticut put in a surprise appearance. That’s probably going to be about it for us this summer. Although we have been busy relocating 3 raccoons this week! We live in a flat subdivision surrounded by more of the same. Have no idea where they are coming from!

      1. I think these three were a mama, papa, and a nearly grown daughter! They were not hard to manage in the large HaveAHeart trap and didn’t seem unduly stressed by the whole operation. Thank goodness! But I didn’t know raccoons loved peanut butter so much!

        1. Oh, Joan, they really love Oreo cookies! Have you read any of my past posts about our baby coon adventures? We raised two, one in the summer of 07 and then again last summer. What a great experience! Good for you for helping them out.

  17. Well, I think the pulled pork tacos were a success, but I should probably put “pulled” in quotations — did my pork in a crock pot No smokers or grills for me. Yay apartment life. Both my brothers and my husband ended the night stuffed though, so I was happy! I made the pork for soft tacos, my own spanish rice and guacamole, and opened up some Old El Paso refried beans too. ‘Twas yummy! Cammy, your recipe sounds good too!

  18. Okay, folks, drawing will be on Sunday.

And I don’t know what’s wrong with WordPress, but it is placing replies randomly on the page. Sorry about that, because some of us are OCD about such and can’t stand that they are out of order. Oh well . . . life goes on.

  19. I’ve wanted to get back with you since the OBS Challenge blog entry. Don’t know if you’ve had a chance to check out OBS, but I think it’s at least worth looking at..

As usual, love ll your posts and adventures. Keep it up! We love em.
