Happy 4th of July everyone!

Every year, for as long as I can remember having children, there was a magnificent fireworks display in the nearby city of Houma. However, for reasons unknown to the local newspaper and me, there will be no display this year.

Private fireworks are illegal in this parish, so I don’t like to buy them for the boys to do on our property.

I will miss seeing the fireworks this year–so much so that the 4th for me just won’t be the same without it.

For some reason, I was compelled to take photos last year. Night photography is difficult when you don’t have a tripod. Even more difficult when you don’t know what you’re doing, as in my case!

I pulled up these photos and decided to display them here in memory of fantastic fireworks fantasias of days gone by.

Without the chest-rattling, resounding BOOM, it’s just not the same!

So, come on and cheer me up! Tell me what you plan to do for the 4th, and maybe I’ll be inspired to do more than make lists about what I need to be doing!

  1. Your pictures are amazing!!!!!! What settings did you use?
    Carol

Carol, I’d be lying to you if I told you. I’d have to go look at the properties to tell you. BRB. Ok, most of them were F 5.6 at 1/60 second. However, photo number 3 was F 4.2 at 4 seconds, which is why it has so much motion. In most books, that’s just a big BOO BOO!!!!! Does that help?

  2. oops. We’re gonna do our usual big noisy family ‘do’. There’s always too much food (even though we say we’re not going to fix so many dishes as last time). Kids running in and out and everybody talking at the same time. 🙂
Then when I get back home I’m going to sit on my back porch and wait for the new semi-feral kittens to come back and play on the rocking chair.
We also have coon furfriends and the young one will usually peek out from under the porch at some point.

Sounds like a nice peaceful day! I love that you have semi-feral kittens and tiny coons! We have 3 semi-ferals that hang out on our porch, too! But our baby coon is in the house with us!

  3. Won’t be quite as noisy around here this year. Four of the grandchildren (and their parents) are out of town. The 4 that will be here will be running around, riding bikes and asking for tractor rides till they eat @ 6. Then there will be age appropriate fireworks. Sparklers and poppers for the (2) 3 yrs, old and firecrackers (LIT ON THE GROUND with a parent at their side) for the 5&6 yrs. old. The “Daddy’s” will take charge of the “pretty” fireworks when it gets dark. Menu…Hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, sausage and baby back ribs (on the pit). Then there is Baked beans, potato salad, a veggie platter and dessert. B.W., there will be enough food here for you and your crew, if you want to head this way. Our fireworks display will be on a small scale, but Baton Rouge’s “Fireworks On The Levee” starts at 9 p.m.

Oh, Steph, thanks so much for the invite, but we just got home from BigSis’s house. They extended a last-minute invite. Sounds like y’all had a great day planned!

  4. HOpe you had a great 4th!! We didnt do anything special – just tried to fill the silo with haylage – chopped hay that ferments.. as opposed to baled dry hay. How are things for you? Anymore on the cottage?

Hey. I think our emails are getting lost! I do a little something on the cottage every day but don’t post photos unless it’s something major or a room gets finished!! Coming soon, though!

  5. Nice job with the pics!

Neighbors up and down the river here were firing off the pyrotechnics from their front yards and docks . Sounded a bit like a war zone and it must scare the beejeezus out of the swamp wildlife, but it was pretty to see.

    Hope you enjoyed your holiday.

  6. If it makes you feel any better, we missed the fireworks in Florida because the show at Noah’s Ark lasted too darn long! This year was pretty disappointing as far as explosions and color! The only thing that made it a little better was sitting on the roof watching all the idiots ride by on “the strip”, whooping and hollering and getting pulled over by the police!

Yes, but wasn’t it “fun” being there as married couple?!!!!
