Sweet 16 and Sweet 22 Sunday!
Sounds like a couple of birthdays, does it not? Well, you’re right on one count–the Sweet 16. But first let me tell you about the Sweet 22. As you all know, we had a cold snap with a little ice and snow–unheard of down here in the tropics, especially before the first day of winter…
Resurrected from September 2007 . . .
There are very few things I am as passionate about as the Louisiana wetlands. Below is a shorter version of an article written a mere 2 years after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans and outlying areas, and Hurricane Rita flooded my home and many coastal communities. Maybe you will learn a little more about the…
Hurricane Ike – The Humans
On that first Sunday that Lil Sis and I took our adventure by boat and then by truck down the bayou to get our first glance at the damage, our truck driver, Mechanic, said something very interesting. I’m noting it here so I remember it for future reference. “When you evacuate, you can become a…
Liquid Ballerina!
Congratulations Choupiquer on your winning entry! It’s perfect! Please email me your mailing address for your prize. Isn’t this a great name for this photo? All the entries were super! It was tough making this decision. I really like Wetland Alien submitted by Kim, and also Heather’s last attempt, of Voyager I to Voyager II….
Excuse me, ma'am, is that a raccoon on your desk?
Well, I do believe it is a raccoon!!! And a youngun at that! Can it be? Are we once again blessed with a baby coon to replace our precious Chaoui? It would be so grand to be an animal mother. They don’t have to wait years to get another chance to “raise a child”. Chaoui…
Tenacity over Tears: The Choice is Ours
This is the article that received a 3rd place award in the Coastal Restoration Category at the Louisiana Outdoor Writer’s Association Excellence in Craft competition-2009. “Tenacity over Tears” is a phrase I coined in reference to the repeated reaction of the residents of coastal Louisiana to the continued negative impact on their homes, culture, recreation,…

Creepy! But, it’s a good photo.
Food Chain. Momma Nature’s sacred circle of life.
I luv the coming autumn season when spider webs dripping jewels of dew sparkles in the early morning sun.
So the banana spiders are out already? Must be time for fall!
Yes, Kim, isn’t it amazing? One morning this week I walked outside to the absence of humidity and the sky had a green aura like after a hurricane. I sensed the earth had tilted slightly; and now sunrise is after 6 a.m., not before.
Ooooh, I know they are necessary in the great scheme of things – but I HATE spiders! My sympathies are all with the locust. They have such a short life anyway, seems terrible to shorten it further!
I look forward to the first song of the cicada high in the live oak trees signaling the onslaught of summer; and then before you know it, the banana spider webs extend between the branches of the same oak trees, trapping the beautiful cicadas for food.
Noisy little buggers !!
One of my lovely memories of my indoor Siamese centers around a locust. She was sitting on the second floor balcony (which fronted a small, tree-lined creek) outside the kitchen, when she suddenly darted back in. You could almost hear her saying, “See, Momma, I told you I could catch a bird!” A locust had literally flown head first into her mouth and its wings were flapping on each side of her jaws. She was so upset with me when I took it away and released it!
Great story, Joan!
