Time for a Wetland Lesson
Many of you newer readers have no clue how this blog about Life in the Louisiana Wetlands came to be or why anyone would even care to write or read about such things. As you read the story of how I came from north Louisiana to south Louisiana and ended up staying, it is impossible to separate my story from the wetlands that drew me and held me.
An Original Bayou Woman
It was 1979, and I was working as a dispatcher for ODECO. She answered the old black phone in her native tongue, her words lost on me. I had called her house to ask if her son, the crew boat captain, happened to be home. Hoping she could understand me, I continued in English, “He has to go on a run right now.” His boat was next up to take a trip out to the Gulf to deliver emergency equipment, and as night dispatcher, it was my job to find him. She understood me well enough to relate to me in broken English where she thought he might have been.

Have you heard of Story Corps?
Bayou Woman recently took part in a Story Corps and NRDC project. Come take a look!
Eagle Expo and a Cajun Man
This weekend was the fourth annual Eagle Expo, hosted by the Cajun Coast Visitors and Convention Bureau. Folks from all over drive down, attend a couple workshops where eagle experts talk about them, and then everyone takes a boat ride out into some area of either St. Mary or Terrebonne Parishes in pursuit of eagles…
Bayou Christmas Eve!
It’s a tradition down the bayou, to have a Christmas boat parade that takes Santa past all our houses, ending up down the bayou where he gets out of the boat and gives gifts to all the kids while everyone eats gumbo. As I watched the boat parade and took photos, a little story formed in my brain, and this poem is the result. I hope you enjoy it, mon amis!
You finish the story winner!
We have a winner! The guest writer, 8 year old Little Bit, has swept the board with his ending to the Adventures of Butch and Ti Du. Congratulations, Little Bit! Cammy, his grandmother, is a regular reader and commenter here. I”m so glad she mentioned his story-telling ability and thank her for getting him to…
Great pictures!! I love the picture of Miah relaxing in the swing.
Fall, Fairs…fun times… kids all ages!
I’ve never seen a kid so completely relaxed on a moving ride as Miah! He has some serious coolness goin’ on
Tilt-a-Whirl! I love the tilt-a-whirl, and it looks like the boys did, too!
looks like they had a blast!
Hey, I’m sending your information to a friend who has moved to Louisiana. She homeschools and I think your tours, etc would fit well into her curriculum, Wendy.
Oh, that sounds great Sue!!! I’d be glad to help in any way I can! Thanks! ( Did you know I homeschooled all my kids?)
I did not know that. I’ll pass that tidbit on too. I hope she decides to make the trip to your place. How cool would that be, to have a Joe’s Run girl meet my blog friend Wendy!
Gee, no warning???
I am getting really old but looking at carnival rides or hearing music still makes me very dizzy and ill.
Still thinking of being a carney when I grow up though.
Cooking trout this week.
Trout yum. Termite looked around at the “Carnies” hawking their games and said, “Wow, this must be a really depressing lifestyle. 🙁 “
I too love the Swing photo. Did he pose for you or is that his “style” of relaxing on this ride?
It was so cute!! Every time he came around to me, he was in a different pose!! There were four altogether I believe! He’s a real camera ham!
Love fairs. Popcorn, cotton candy, sausage on a stick, etc. and lots of lbs.
It has been years since I went to one. Can’t take that walking any more.
Looks like Miah was in his element! Bet he had a blast.
Wow our fair is in August and in Oklahoma that means it’s 104 degrees and 210 humidity, lol. The state fair was last week and it was beautiful weather. Looks like the boys had a blast.
Cuuute! The last two years when I’ve gone with him, the Tilt-a-Whirl is the only one I ride! (Always been my favorite carnival ride… I remember riding it with YOU! At Hamel’s Park, maybe?) Anyway, Miah and I can get that thing spinning something fierce! Love it. 🙂
You should have posted the other swing poses! *lol*
Now, I’m off to find your house post to see if I can find the pictures of your kitchen counters. I’ve been meaning to ask you who did them because I want new ones. Email me!
